Obverse
Bust of King Edward, crowned and robed, right, branch of laurel stem wrapped with ribbon below. Legend: “EDWARD VII CROWNED 9.AUGUST 1902”.
Reverse
Bust of Queen Alexandra, crowned and veiled, right, branches of rose below. On a ribbon at the foot: “9.AUG.1902”. Legend: “ALEXANDRA QUEEN CONSORT.”
Notes: The large medal (Originally issued inside a red leather case lined on the inside with white silk and blue velvet. On the outside of the lid in gilt, crowned “EVIIR” monogram dividing: “1902” and: “CORONATION MEDAL” in an arc below. (This medal not in the original box)
These medals were initially made with the date 26 June when the coronation was originally planned. However, the coronation had be to rescheduled for 9 August because the King required an emergency operation for appendicitis. The first batch of medals were melted and remade with the date of 9 August.
