Alan James Shelley Weaving was born in Nairobi, Kenya, in 1938. He was educated in Kenya, and at Blundell's School in England. He graduated at Exeter University with a B.Sc degree.

He is a professional entomologist. After working in Kenya, he settled in Rhodesia in 1967, and was stationed in Chiredzi and Salisbury while working for the Ministry of Agriculture in the Department of Research and Specialist Services. He is at present Senior Entomologist in the Plant Protection Research Institute.

Alan Weaving is married and has three young daughters. His spare time is devoted to natural history photography with a special interest in birds.
