The Genus Watsonia by Peter Goldblatt
Watsonia is an Important genus of southern African plants, comprising 52 species, 12 of which are newly described here. Most are attractive and valuable in horticulture. Several species, as well as a few hybrids, are widely Cultivated in southern Africa and in many other parts of the world, and Watsonia is of growing importance for the cut flower trade. Yet until now there has been no written work that deals with the genus in a comprehensive way. This book thus fills an important botanical need for information about a genus that ranges from the eastern Transvaal and Swaziland through the High Drakensberg of Lesotho and Natal to the western Cape and Namaqualand. The 52 species recognized here are described in complete botanical detail, with distribution maps and detailed analyses of their characteristics. Illustrations include line drawings for most species and life size watercolours for 24 species. The result of research from 1978-1987, THE GENUS WATSONIA is complete in scientific detail, and includes the full nomenclature and geographic distribution in the wild for each species. A key is provided for the wild species but does not, unfortunately, accommodate the several hybrids that are known in the wild or are in cultivation since the variation in hybrids cuts across species lines making the preparation of a useful key impossible. A complete history of Watsonia is included, detailing the discovery and naming of the first species in 1754 and the subsequent history of botanical exploration in southern Africa that over the next two centuries led to the accumulation of knowledge about the flora and the recognition of the 52 species now included in the genus. It is written in the hope that the interested layman and horticulturist as well as the trained botanist will be able to use it to identify species and to learn about their biology, history, relationships, and how to grow them.
