BIRDS - An Artist's View by Terance James Bond

ZAR 100.00

Terance James Bond, one of the great ornithological painters of our time, paints the  birds he likes best: this glorious retrospective is a personal one and reflects his love and fascination for the aesthetically superb combination of birds and their natural habitats. His birds are so striking and painted with such enthusiasm and fidelity that the success of his work is assured.

His birds are closely related to their environment, and in perfect scale with their surroundings. His artist's eye selects tiny pieces of habitat and a host of varied subject matter to make up the fascinating backgrounds to his birds: trees, pine cones, stones, as well as old paint pots, flaking woodwork, and broken nest boxes, which combine evidence of the hand of man with the natural world and add an appealing intimacy to his work.

Terance considers the composition with great care; mental notes of likely compositions eventually come together, with collections of odds and ends from the woods and fields near his home, his mood, and the time of year, to spark the creation of another picture. As well as considering the character and pose of the bird itself, and the range of colours and tones that blend together to form an attractive picture, he also takes into account background shapes and spaces, which serve to complement and enhance the bird. Sometimes he chooses to set a brightly coloured bird in an almost monochrome background, or puts a grey bird into a richly detailed, warmly coloured tangle of pine branches. Often, he paints a complete picture, bird and background, with a deliberately restricted range of colours to create on his canvas a remarkable subtlety of colour and intricacy of detail. Such Piceures pictures are are among his very best.

The birds portrayed in this book represent a range of species that are common mostly in the Northern Hemisphere. Terance has also included, as an occasional indulgence, the luxury of a rare, or special bird, a memory of a particular encounter, or an unexpected visitor to his home in Suffolk. Birds: An Artist's View is a remarkably satisfying collection of work, from initial pencil sketches to the complex and stunning finished paintings, representing many years of work by one of the most popular and talented bird artists in Europe
