Nat (Nathanaël) Grobbelaar was born in Port Elizabeth in 1928. He is a plant biochemist and emeritus professor of botany at the University of Pretoria where he taught for 35 years and was departmental head for 27 years. He is a founding member of the South African Association of Botanists and the first editor of the Society's journal, the "South African Journal of Botany". The Society honoured him by the allocation of an honorary membership and their coveted Gold Medal.
