The Shell Guide to England Edited by John Hadfield
This Guide to England completes the series of Shell Guides to individual countries which have already covered Scotland, Ireland and Wales. The pattern that has proved so successful in the earlier guides is repeated here: there is an introduction describing the: country, ts history and its chief features as a whole; and there is a gazetteer containing descriptions of the most interesting and beautiful places, arranged in alphabetical order.
England, however, has such a diverse treasure of art and beauty that one author could hardly do justice to the whole. And so John Hadfield, the editor, has gathered a distinguished team of writers to contribute introductory essays on different aspects of the English heritage: J. B.Priestley to preface the whole work, and Olive Cook, G. E. Fussell, Miles Hadfield, Jacquetta Hawkes, Paul Jennings, Barbara Jones, James LeesMilne, John Lewis, Jack Longland, L. T. C. Rolt, Anne Scott-James, Sir John Summerson and Maurice Wiggin.
