Norman Eaton: Architect -A study of the work of the South African architect Norman Eaton 1902-1966 by Clinton Harrop-Allin

ZAR 1,400.00

Norman Eaton emerged during the 1940’s and 1950’s as one of South Africa's foremost modern architects, In his lifetime he produced a body of work, mainly in the Transvaal, that was thoroughly contemporary and at the same time uniquely relevant to its South African setting: Eaton's work showed, from the outset, an impulse towards a regional emphasis as regards the choice and handling of materials and a sensitivity to landscape and climate, and this special relevance to the African milieu sets his architecture apart from that of his contemporaries. His intense study of architectural history, including South Africa's own Cape Dutch heritage, and his conviction that the great achievements of the past held vital valid lessons, enabled him to rise above the narrow precepts of styles and movements.

Above all, it was Eaton's ability to achieve a total integration of materials and design, his empathy for and inspired handling of traditional and indigenous materials and his outstanding creative originality which make him such a significant figure in South African architecture

It is hoped that this book will bring Norman Eaton the wide recognition which he so richly earned.
