With The Irregulars In The Transvaal And Zululand

With the Irregulars in the Transvaal and Zululand by W.H. Tomasson – 2004 Military Publishers Hardcover Reprint of the 1881 Original

Originally published in London in 1881, With the Irregulars in the Transvaal and Zululand is a rare memoir of frontier campaigning in Southern Africa at the height of Britain’s imperial wars. Written by W.H. Tomasson, an officer who served with locally raised irregular units, it provides an invaluable soldier’s narrative of two major conflicts: the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879 and the First Anglo-Boer War of 1880–1881.

Tomasson’s account vividly captures the experiences of men serving outside the formal structures of the British Army. He describes the often harsh conditions of campaigning, the realities of irregular soldiering, encounters with Zulu and Boer opponents, and the challenges of navigating a rugged land during a time of political upheaval. His narrative is particularly valuable for its immediacy, written so soon after the events, and for its focus on the irregular forces whose contributions are often overlooked in official histories.

The 2004 hardcover reprint by Military Publishers carefully reproduces the original text, allowing modern readers access to a work that had long been scarce and sought after by collectors. This sturdy edition ensures durability for study and reference while preserving the 19th-century style and spirit of the original.

This volume appeals not only to military historians but also to collectors of Africana, students of British colonial warfare, and readers interested in the Zulu and Boer struggles against imperial expansion. It stands as both a gripping personal narrative and a valuable primary source for understanding the complexities of Southern Africa’s late 19th-century wars.
