The Squamata (Reptilia) of the Orange Free State by S. W. P. de Waal is a seminal herpetological monograph originally published in the Memoirs of the National Museum, Bloemfontein (No. 11). While the formal date of the memoir is often listed as 1978, it was researched earlier (1977) and represents an authoritative taxonomic and ecological survey of lizards and snakes (Sauria, Serpentes, Amphisbaenia) in the Orange Free State region.
De Waal’s work is based on a systematic examination of over 4,400 specimens covering 77 species and subspecies. The monograph includes detailed morphological descriptions, colour patterns, habitat preferences, breeding data and distribution maps plotted using geographic units. De Waal also analyzes biogeographic patterns, noting how rainfall and environmental gradients influence species distribution. His careful treatment of taxonomically important characters and observed variation supports both conservation biology and future research.
This volume remains a key reference for herpetologists, biodiversity researchers, field ecologists and conservation planners interested in southern African reptile fauna. Its detailed species-level accounts and historical significance make The Squamata of the Orange Free State a prized scientific resource — both as a baseline for comparative studies and as a documentation of reptile diversity in that part of South Africa.
