Medicinal and Charm Plants of Pondoland

Medicinal and Charm Plants of Pondoland by Sinegugu Zukulu, Tony Dold, Tony Abbott & Domitilla Raimondo(South African National Biodiversity Institute, 2012, ISBN 9781919976716) is a concise yet rich ethnobotanical reference that documents the traditional uses of indigenous plants in the Pondoland Centre of Plant Endemism — a biologically unique region along South Africa’s Wild Coast renowned for its high concentration of endemic species. This first edition paperback, spanning approximately 79–84 pages, bridges botanical science with living cultural knowledge by presenting plants not just as biological organisms, but as active participants in human healing and ritual life.

Compiled through interviews with local herbalists, Medicinal and Charm Plants of Pondoland profiles roughly sixty medicinal and charm plants used by amaMpondo and other communities in and around Pondoland. Each species entry includes its scientific name, traditional uses, and local cultural context, touching on treatments for common ailments, ceremonial applications, protection rituals, and the roles plants play in daily life. The narrative acknowledges that many of these practices derive from generations of indigenous knowledge, making this work as much a cultural preservation project as a botanical guide.

Produced by SANBI (South African National Biodiversity Institute), the volume also serves educational purposes, supporting learners and researchers in understanding South Africa’s plant biodiversity, indigenous knowledge systems, and conservation challenges. Featuring essential glossary and index material, it is valuable to ethnobotanists, conservationists, students of African traditional medicine, and anyone interested in the interplay between people, plants, and place.
