Classic account of the Second World War in Europe. The Struggle for Europe by Chester Wilmot is widely regarded as one of the most important early histories of the European theatre of World War II.
Originally published in 1952 and based on extensive wartime reporting and access to Allied and German sources, Wilmot’s work offers a detailed narrative of the political and military decisions that shaped the outcome of the war in Europe. Covering the period from the early German victories through the Allied campaigns in North Africa, Italy and Western Europe, the book examines the strategic disagreements between Allied commanders and the critical decisions that ultimately led to the defeat of Nazi Germany.
Wilmot, an Australian war correspondent who reported from the front lines during the war, combines first-hand observation with careful historical research. His analysis of figures such as Winston Churchill, Adolf Hitler, Dwight D. Eisenhower and the Allied high command helped establish the book as a landmark in modern military history.
This Fontana Books paperback edition, issued in 1966 with an introduction by Michael Howard, remains a widely respected and accessible edition of Wilmot’s influential study. It continues to be sought after by readers and collectors interested in World War II history, military strategy and twentieth-century European history.
