The Admiral’s Baby

The Admiral’s Baby by Laurens van der Post is a richly textured memoir first published in 1996 by John Murray Publishers Ltd, offering a remarkable personal account of turbulent post‑World War II events in Indonesia. This edition presents an insightful narrative spanning 340 pages, grounded in van der Post’s own experiences following his release from a harsh Japanese prisoner‑of‑war camp in Java. In The Admiral’s Baby, the author transitions from captive to unexpected peacemaker, entrusted with overseeing the very Japanese who had held him and navigating the complex political landscape of Indonesia as the nation sought independence.

In The Admiral’s Baby, Laurens van der Post positions himself at the centre of a critical juncture in Southeast Asian history. The title of the book derives from a message sent by Admiral Patterson to Lord Mountbatten, capturing the precarious nature of the mission to maintain peace amid rising tensions and nationalist fervour. Throughout the narrative, van der Post portrays his interactions with British military leaders, Dutch colonial officials, and Indonesian nationalists, illustrating the multifaceted challenges of maintaining order after years of brutal occupation and war. His reflections combine firsthand observation with thoughtful character sketches and cultural insight, providing context to the broader historical forces at play.

Readers drawn to historical military memoirs and firsthand war‑time journalism will find The Admiral’s Baby both absorbing and thought‑provoking. It sheds light on lesser‑known aspects of the Indonesian Revolution and the role played by Allied forces during a period of significant upheaval. Van der Post’s distinctive voice, shaped by his South African roots and wide‑ranging life experiences, infuses the narrative with a reflective quality that extends beyond mere historical recounting.
