Pollination Biology edited by Leslie Real

Pollination Biology is a foundational scientific reference edited by Leslie A. Real and published in 1983 by Academic Press. This comprehensive volume synthesises the state of knowledge in the interdisciplinary field of pollination science, exploring how plants and their pollinators interact, evolve and co‑exist. At approximately 338 pages, Pollination Biologybrings together contributions from leading researchers to provide both broad theoretical context and detailed examination of specific processes that govern pollen transfer, plant breeding systems and pollinator behaviour.

At the core of Pollination Biology is a historic look at how research on pollen transfer and flower‑pollinator relationships developed, from early observational studies to more analytical and experimental frameworks. The book covers the role of insect pollination in the evolution of flowering plants, the ecological and evolutionary correlations between climate and pollination strategies, and the complexities of plant sexual systems such as self‑pollination, cross‑pollination and self‑incompatibility. Later chapters examine pollinator foraging behaviour, the adaptive nature of floral traits and competitive interactions among flowering plants for pollinators, extending understanding of how ecological context shapes reproductive success in plants.

Designed for advanced undergraduate and graduate students, researchers and serious naturalists, Pollination Biology offers both a synthesis of classic literature and insights into evolving research questions. Its balanced presentation of evolutionary theory and empirical study makes Pollination Biology a valuable addition to academic libraries and a key resource for those engaged in botany, ecology, evolutionary biology and conservation research.
