Gallipoli: The Ottoman Campaign

Gallipoli: The Ottoman Campaign by Edward J. Erickson, published in 2010 by Pen and Sword, is a meticulously researched military history that re-examines one of the most studied campaigns of the First World War from a crucial but often underrepresented perspective. Rather than focusing solely on the Allied experience, Gallipoli: The Ottoman Campaign places the Ottoman Army at the centre of the narrative, offering readers a more balanced and comprehensive understanding of the conflict.

In Gallipoli: The Ottoman Campaign, Erickson draws on extensive archival material, including Ottoman military records, to reconstruct the planning, strategy and execution of the campaign from the defending side. The book explores how Ottoman commanders organised their forces, responded to the Allied landings and ultimately mounted a successful defence against a powerful invasion. Through this lens, Gallipoli: The Ottoman Campaign challenges long-standing assumptions and highlights the effectiveness, resilience and adaptability of Ottoman leadership and troops during the campaign.

The work also provides detailed analysis of key battles, logistical challenges and command decisions, placing them within the broader context of First World War strategy. Erickson’s clear and authoritative style makes complex military operations accessible without sacrificing depth, making Gallipoli: The Ottoman Campaign valuable to both serious historians and general readers interested in military history. Maps and supporting material further enhance the reader’s understanding of troop movements and battlefield dynamics.

For those seeking a deeper and more nuanced perspective on the Gallipoli campaign, Gallipoli: The Ottoman Campaign stands as an essential contribution, shedding new light on a pivotal moment in global history and expanding appreciation of the Ottoman role in shaping its outcome.
