Locomotives – Scarce 1936 third edition two-volume railway engineering classic by A. Morton Bell, complete in attractive original plum cloth with fold-out locomotive diagrams and colour plates.
1 in stock
A substantial and increasingly scarce 1936 third edition two-volume set of Locomotives: Their Construction, Maintenance and Operation by A. Morton Bell, one of the classic interwar works on steam locomotive engineering. Covering locomotive construction, maintenance, operation, and including notes on electric and internal combustion motive power, this monumental reference is richly illustrated throughout with technical diagrams, fold-out plates and colour frontispieces.
The set provides an in-depth study of locomotive design and practice from the great age of steam, making Locomotives highly desirable to railway historians, railwayana collectors, model engineers and enthusiasts of British and international locomotive development. Particularly appealing are the handsome original plum cloth bindings, each with blind-stamped locomotive motif to the front board and bright gilt lettering to the spine. The large fold-out engineering plates and detailed sectional drawings add considerably to Locomotives collector appeal.
Condition – Very Good
No dust jackets. Original plum cloth boards remain very attractive, with only light general wear and minor rubbing. Gilt titles to the spines remain bright and clear. Prior ownership name in ink to the inner covers and a different ownership inscription in pencil to the endpapers. Both volumes have remnants of earlier brown paper protective covers adhered to the endpapers. Moderate foxing to endpapers and preliminaries, with some lighter foxing elsewhere. Some hinge separation is present but both volumes remain sound and complete. Large fold-out plates and colour illustrations appear present and in good order.
