Souvenir of the Union of South Africa – 1910 Large Format Illustrated Hardcover

Published to commemorate the formation of the Union of South Africa in 1910, this handsome large-format souvenir volume provides a fascinating contemporary look at the newly united country. Divided into sections on the Cape Colony, Orange River Colony, Transvaal, Natal and the first Union Parliament, the book captures South Africa at the dawn of Union through photographs, historical notes, architecture, public buildings and scenes from across the four provinces.

Bound in its original dark green cloth with elaborate gilt decoration and the title “Souvenir of the Union of South Africa” to the upper board, this is an especially attractive and display-worthy copy. The book also includes an appendix containing the South Africa Act, making Souvenir of the Union of South Africa an important historical reference work as well as a desirable collector’s piece for those interested in early South African history, colonial history, Boer War aftermath, Cape Town, Natal, the Transvaal and Union-era memorabilia.

Printed by The South African Newspaper Co., Ltd., printers and proprietors of The South African News, Cape Town, Souvenir of the Union of South Africa was almost certainly issued in 1910 to mark Union. Large-format illustrated South African books of this period are increasingly difficult to find, particularly in original gilt cloth and in complete condition.

Condition – Very good

Original green cloth boards are clean and attractive with bright gilt decoration and titles. Binding appears sound and firm. Internally clean with only light age toning. There is a prior ownership inscription in ink on the endpaper, and the bottom corner of the first page is missing. These faults are minor and do not affect the text or overall presentation of Souvenir of the Union of South Africa.
