Published in London by Hodder & Stoughton in 1920, this elegant edition of Egypt and Its Monuments by Robert Hichens is a striking example of early twentieth-century Egyptological publishing and decorative bookbinding. Produced during the height of Western fascination with Ancient Egypt, the volume combines scholarly travel writing with lavish artistic presentation, featuring illustrations by Jules Guérin together with photographic plates that capture the grandeur of Egypt’s temples, monuments, tombs, and landscapes.
Egypt and Its Monuments is especially attractive due to its finely executed full leather binding with extensive gilt tooling to both boards and spine. The elaborate gilt decoration, paired with richly marbled endpapers and marbled text block edges, gives the book a luxurious and highly displayable appearance. The spine retains bright gilt titling and ornamental work, while the central gilt crest and decorative borders on the covers contribute to the book’s unmistakably period aesthetic.
The work explores the monuments and history of Ancient Egypt in an accessible and engaging style, making it appealing not only to collectors of Egyptology and archaeology, but also to enthusiasts of antique travel literature, decorative bindings, and illustrated books. Copies of Egypt and Its Monuments in deluxe leather bindings are increasingly sought after for both private libraries and interior décor purposes.
An interesting provenance feature is the 1935 College of Preceptors prize label awarded to a pupil of the Christian Brothers’ College in Pretoria, South Africa, adding a layer of historical character and local interest.
Despite some unfortunate rodent-related damage to the lower edge of the rear board, Egypt and Its Monuments remains highly attractive overall and displays beautifully on the shelf. A desirable collectible antique book with strong decorative appeal and enduring interest in Ancient Egyptian history and culture.
