1 in stock
An uncommon and historically significant bilingual provincial government publication from the former Province of Natal, this Provincial Council Natal Standing Rules / Provinsiale Raad Reglement van Orde was issued in Pietermaritzburg by The Natal Witness Ltd in 1965 under the authority of the Republic of South Africa Constitution Act of 1961. Produced in an unusual reversible “tête-bêche” format, the volume contains both English and Afrikaans texts, each beginning from opposite covers, reflecting the bilingual administrative structure of South Africa during the mid-20th century.
This compact A5-sized hardcover copy of Provincial Council Natal Standing Rules serves as the official procedural and standing orders manual governing the conduct of Natal Provincial Council meetings, debates, committee procedures, motions, voting protocols, financial business, and legislative administration. The detailed contents include rules relating to public business, preservation of order, divisions and voting, committees, adjournments, and procedural conduct within council chambers. Such publications were produced in relatively limited quantities for official governmental use and were seldom distributed commercially, making surviving copies increasingly difficult to source today.
Provincial Council Natal Standing Rules carries authentic official council stamps along with period ownership markings and handwritten blue ink annotations, adding to its provenance and institutional character. Publications connected to the governance structures of Natal prior to the formation of modern KwaZulu-Natal remain highly collectible within Africana, South African constitutional history, and political ephemera circles.
Provincial Council Natal Standing Rules is an appealing acquisition for collectors of Africana, South African political history, parliamentary procedure, constitutional material, or rare provincial government publications. The dual-language presentation, official markings, and original blue cloth binding further enhance the book’s historical and display appeal.
