Fishes by Markus-Eliezer Bloch is a visually impressive and increasingly difficult-to-find large-format natural history volume published by The Ariel Press in 1959. This beautifully produced work showcases the extraordinary fish illustrations of Bloch, whose pioneering contributions to ichthyology and scientific illustration established him as one of the foremost natural historians of the eighteenth century. Edited by Eva Mannering, the volume presents a carefully curated selection of Bloch’s celebrated fish studies in vivid colour plates that remain highly admired by collectors, marine enthusiasts, zoologists, and lovers of classical natural history art.
Fishes captures both the scientific precision and artistic elegance characteristic of early zoological illustration. Each plate demonstrates remarkable attention to anatomical detail, coloration, texture, and form, making the work appealing not only as a scientific reference but also as a decorative and artistic object. The oversized format allows the illustrations to be fully appreciated and gives the book strong display value in a private collection, library, study, or coastal home décor setting.
Works relating to classical ichthyology and antique scientific illustration have become increasingly sought after internationally, particularly titles connected to influential naturalists such as Bloch. This Ariel Press edition is especially desirable due to its quality production standards, attractive typography, and striking colour reproduction. Copies are notably scarce on the market, particularly in complete and structurally sound condition.
Fishes is an excellent acquisition for collectors of natural history, marine biology, zoological illustration, vintage scientific books, and mid-century art publishing. Also highly suitable for collectors of decorative large-format books and historically important illustrated reference works.
