Few botanical works have achieved the iconic status of Thornton’s Temple of Flora, a publication revered by collectors, botanical historians, art enthusiasts, and lovers of fine illustrated books alike. This beautiful 1951 Collins edition, edited by Geoffrey Grigson and Handasyde Buchanan, faithfully reproduces one of the most celebrated flower books ever published. Originally inspired by Dr. Robert John Thornton’s monumental late eighteenth-century botanical project, Temple of Flora remains renowned for combining scientific observation with dramatic romantic artistry.
This large-format hardcover edition is exceptionally attractive, featuring pale grey paper-covered boards with an elegant pink title label to the upper cover, complemented by brown cloth to the spine with gilt lettering on brown leather title blocks. The production quality is outstanding, with richly reproduced colour and collotype plates printed in the Netherlands, reflecting the grandeur of the original Thornton engravings. Temple of Flora includes striking botanical illustrations of flowers such as hyacinths and exotic blooms presented against sweeping romantic landscapes, making this as much an art book as a botanical reference.
Temple of Flora retains its original dust jacket, itself styled after the wrappers of the rare original parts edition, adding greatly to its collectible appeal. Works on botanical illustration and garden history continue to enjoy strong international demand, particularly editions of Temple of Flora, which are considered cornerstone pieces in botanical art collections.
An exceptional decorative and scholarly volume ideal for collectors of botanical books, natural history, horticultural literature, antique flower illustration, and fine press editions.
