A striking and controversial 1978 photography collection featuring Gary Bernstein’s dramatic black-and-white portrait photography accompanied by text from Bernie Taupin, famed lyricist and longtime collaborator of Elton John.
Burning Cold is a visually powerful and highly collectible 1978 photography volume created by acclaimed photographer Gary Bernstein and writer Bernie Taupin. Published by Harmony Books in New York, this substantial large-format work captures the glamour, mystery, sensuality and artistic expression that defined much of the photographic culture of the late 1970s.
Burning Cold presents Bernstein’s distinctive black-and-white photographic studies, combining fashion, portraiture and artistic nude photography into a sophisticated visual narrative. Taupin’s accompanying text adds an additional layer of atmosphere and interpretation, making the volume more than simply a photography collection. The result is a compelling collaboration between two creative figures working at the height of their respective careers.
Today, Burning Cold remains sought after by collectors of fine art photography, fashion photography, celebrity-related memorabilia and late twentieth-century visual culture. It is also of particular interest to enthusiasts of Bernie Taupin, whose creative legacy extends far beyond his celebrated songwriting partnership with Elton John.
This copy is a good example of the first edition. The dark blue blind-stamped cloth binding remains attractive, with white spine lettering still present. The original dust jacket is retained but is heavily worn, showing substantial edge wear, tears and areas of loss. Internally Burning Cold remains complete, with light foxing present and an orange marker “R” notation on the endpaper. Despite the jacket condition, the volume remains a desirable collector’s item and an increasingly uncommon example of 1970s photographic publishing.
