Eyelids of Morning – The Mingled Destinies of Crocodiles and Men

A visually arresting and intellectually provocative masterpiece, Eyelids of Morning is a rare fusion of natural history, cultural anthropology, photography, and poetic narrative. Originally published in 1973 and reissued in this 1990 softcover edition, the book is presented with elegant French flaps, giving it a refined and collectible feel.

Written by Alistair Graham, with extraordinary photographs, notes, and collages by the legendary Peter Beard, the book takes readers deep into the world of the Nile crocodile and the East African cultures that have lived in both reverence and fear of these ancient reptiles. Graham’s prose is witty, incisive, and layered with irony and ecological insight, while Beard’s imagery — ranging from stark wildlife portraits to elaborate photo collages — captures the raw beauty and existential drama of life in the African wilderness.

More than a wildlife book, Eyelids of Morning is a meditation on the interconnected fates of animals and people in a rapidly changing world. With its blend of science, myth, politics, and art, this volume has become a cult classic among collectors, artists, environmentalists, and admirers of Beard’s singular visual style.
