The Gentle Amazon: The Life and Times of Lady Smith by Jane-Eliza Hasted is a fascinating historical biography that brings to life one of the most remarkable women of seventeenth-century England. First published in 1952 by Museum Press, this well-researched work explores the character, achievements and social world of Lady Smith, presenting readers with a vivid portrait of a woman who defied many of the expectations placed upon women of her era.
Drawing upon historical records, correspondence and contemporary accounts, Hasted recreates the political, social and cultural atmosphere of Restoration England. The narrative offers valuable insights into aristocratic life, family relationships, courtly society and the challenges faced by influential women during a period of significant change in British history. Written in an engaging and accessible style, The Gentle Amazon appeals equally to readers of biography, genealogy, women’s history and British social history.
The Gentle Amazon remains a desirable addition to collections focusing on English history, seventeenth-century studies, women’s biographies and historical literature. First editions from Museum Press continue to attract collectors interested in mid-twentieth-century historical scholarship.
Condition – Good
First edition hardcover published in 1952. The book itself remains in very good condition, with clean pages, sound binding and only light age-related toning. Text block edges are lightly discoloured. The original unclipped dust jacket is present but in fair condition, with substantial loss to the head and foot of the jacket, tears along the spine folds, edge wear, chipping and areas of loss to both panels. Despite the jacket damage, it remains largely intact and has protected the attractive red cloth binding beneath.
