Large Chokwe Style African Tribal Male Figure – Hand-Carved Hardwood Sculpture (68cm) Ethnographic Carving

An impressive large African tribal hardwood carving depicting a standing male figure in the Chokwe style, expertly carved from a single piece of wood. Standing an impressive 68 cm tall, this substantial ethnographic sculpture displays bold proportions, refined facial features and an elaborate traditional hairstyle or ceremonial headdress. Its commanding size and authentic hand-carved character make it an outstanding statement piece for collectors of African tribal art, ethnographic artefacts and handcrafted wooden sculpture.

The nude male figure stands firmly on individually carved feet with both arms held forward at right angles to the body, creating a powerful and balanced composition. The face is beautifully executed with almond-shaped eyes, a broad nose and full lips, while the carved coiffure extends dramatically behind the head in the distinctive Chokwe style. The hands are carefully detailed with individually carved fingers, and the anatomy is boldly represented, including visible male genitalia, reflecting the traditional artistic conventions of African tribal carving.

Hand carved from a single block of hardwood, the sculpture possesses an attractive aged patina that highlights the depth of the carving and years of careful handling. Measuring 68 cm high, 22 cm wide and 21 cm deep, it is an impressive display piece equally suited to Chokwe collections, private collections, galleries or interior décor where authentic African craftsmanship is appreciated.

Condition – Very good vintage condition with an attractive aged patina

Minor edge wear and small losses are present to the elaborate carved coiffure or headgear, consistent with age. The right foot has a stable age-related crack, and there is general surface wear expected of a vintage hand-carved hardwood sculpture. Overall, the figure remains solid and displays exceptionally well.
