Adult Literacy – A Handbook for Development Workers by Paul Fordham, Deryn Holland & Juliet Millican

Adult Literacy: A Handbook for Development Workers is a comprehensive and highly respected guide designed for educators, literacy practitioners, NGO staff, community development workers, trainers, and policy makers involved in adult education. Published jointly by Oxfam and Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO), this practical handbook draws upon decades of international experience to provide effective strategies for developing, implementing and evaluating adult literacy programmes in diverse cultural and socio-economic settings.

Rather than viewing literacy simply as the ability to read and write, the authors present it as a vital catalyst for social, economic and community development. The book explores every stage of establishing successful literacy programmes, from assessing local needs and setting objectives to selecting teaching methods, developing learning materials, teaching numeracy and visual literacy, training literacy workers, and evaluating programme outcomes. Practical examples from numerous countries help bridge theory and real-world application, making the guidance accessible and immediately useful.

Written in clear, straightforward language, this handbook has become a valuable resource for universities, teacher training colleges, humanitarian organisations, government departments and international development agencies. Students of education, literacy studies, international development, social work and community development will also find Adult Literacy an indispensable reference.

Whether you’re building community education programmes, supporting adult learners, or expanding an academic collection, this enduring handbook remains one of the most practical resources available on adult literacy and sustainable development.
