Die Nasionale Boek is one of the most important early reference works documenting the history, ideals and development of the National Party during the formative years of the Union of South Africa. Published in Johannesburg in 1931, this substantial first edition provides an extensive contemporary record of the emergence and growth of Afrikaner nationalism, together with detailed biographical sketches of many of the movement’s founders, leaders and supporters.
Compiled by I. M. Goodman and edited by Dr. Hjalmar Reitz and Harm Oost, Die Nasionale Boek extends far beyond a simple political history. Across more than 700 pages it contains articles on South African politics, constitutional developments, agriculture, mining, industry, transport, commerce, railways, education, economics and social issues, offering a remarkable snapshot of South Africa as viewed during the early 1930s. The bilingual contents pages also reflect the broad range of contributors and subjects included, making the work an invaluable research source for historians, genealogists and collectors of Africana.
Of particular importance is this copy’s provenance. Die Nasionale Boek is signed in ink by both editors, Dr. Hjalmar Reitz—author, politician and son of President F. W. Reitz—and Harm Oost, journalist, politician and prominent National Party figure. Copies bearing both signatures are encountered far less frequently than ordinary examples and add considerable collector appeal.
Today Die Nasionale Boek remains an important historical primary source. While many of its political viewpoints reflect the period in which it was produced, it provides invaluable insight into the ideology, personalities and institutions that shaped South African history during the first half of the twentieth century. An excellent acquisition for collectors of Africana, political history, South African first editions and signed historical works.
