Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s Goethes Werke – Dritter Band (Volume III) is an elegant nineteenth-century German edition that reflects the exceptional standards of fine European book production during the Victorian era. Published by Deutsche Verlags-Anstalt, formerly Eduard Hallberger, of Stuttgart and Leipzig, this beautifully illustrated volume forms part of the publisher’s celebrated collected edition of Goethe’s literary masterpieces.
This volume contains several of Goethe’s dramatic works, including Clavigo, Stella, and Wilhelm Meisters Lehrjahre, accompanied by numerous engraved illustrations created by distinguished German artists. The richly ornamented title pages, decorative chapter headings, elaborate initials and finely executed engravings make Goethes Werke an outstanding example of nineteenth-century German publishing and book design.
The publisher’s binding is particularly striking, featuring profusely decorative burgundy cloth boards with intricate gilt and black Art Nouveau-inspired decoration and a central portrait medallion of Goethe on the front cover. The rear cover carries the publisher’s decorative device of Deutsche Verlags-Anstalt, while the interior typography remains crisp and highly attractive.
Beyond its literary significance, Goethes Werke appeals to collectors of fine bindings, antique illustrated books, German literature, Victorian decorative arts and Goetheana. It makes an impressive display piece while remaining a substantial reading edition of one of Germany’s greatest literary figures. Individual volumes from this illustrated series are increasingly sought after by collectors wishing to complete sets or acquire attractive nineteenth-century editions of Goethe’s enduring works.
