A delightfully whimsical and increasingly scarce piece of Guinness advertising history, Prodigies and Prodigals: Brought to Book by Guinness is one of the celebrated promotional gift booklets produced by Arthur Guinness Son & Co. Ltd. during the late 1930s. First issued in 1939, this charming 20-page publication was designed to entertain while subtly promoting Guinness through humorous verse, imaginative storytelling, and striking full-colour illustrations by the accomplished artist Antony Groves-Raines. It formed part of the famous series of Christmas booklets presented to members of the medical profession and is now highly sought after by collectors of advertising ephemera.
Each page combines witty poetry with elaborate illustrations featuring eccentric characters, circus performers, sailors, aristocrats and fantastical scenes, all culminating in gentle references to Guinness. The quality of the artwork, thick interior paper and imaginative design make this far more than an advertising booklet— Prodigies and Prodigals is a miniature work of graphic art from Britain’s Golden Age of commercial illustration.
Examples of Prodigies and Prodigals are becoming increasingly difficult to source, particularly outside Europe, making it an attractive acquisition for collectors of Guinness memorabilia, brewery advertising, illustrated books, caricature art, vintage ephemera and twentieth-century commercial design.
Illustrated throughout in vibrant colour, this booklet displays the distinctive humour and visual style that made the Guinness advertising campaigns legendary. Whether displayed as part of a Guinness collection or preserved as an example of exceptional advertising illustration, Prodigies and Prodigals remains a fascinating survivor from one of the world’s most successful promotional publishing programmes.
