Phanerogamic Flora of the Divisions of Uitenhage and Port Elizabeth by Selmar Schönland is the inaugural volume in the Botanical Survey of South Africa Memoirs, making it an important milestone in the scientific documentation of South Africa’s remarkable plant diversity. Published in 1919 by the Government Printing and Stationery Office in Pretoria, this work provides one of the earliest comprehensive botanical surveys of the Uitenhage and Port Elizabeth districts of the Eastern Cape.
Prepared as Memoir No. 1, Phanerogamic Flora combines botanical taxonomy with valuable information on regional topography, geology, climate, phytogeography and vegetation. It concludes with an extensive systematic list of flowering plants known from the region at the time of publication, making it an indispensable historical reference for botanists, ecologists, environmental historians and collectors of South African scientific literature. The volume also includes a sketch map and represents an important contribution from the Herbarium of the Albany Museum in Grahamstown.
Beyond its scientific value, this publication documents the state of the Eastern Cape flora over a century ago, providing an important baseline for modern conservation studies and botanical research. Early Botanical Survey memoirs such as Phanerogamic Flora are increasingly difficult to locate, particularly complete examples retaining their original printed wrappers.
This publication will appeal to collectors of Africana, botanical reference works, South African natural history, government publications, and historical scientific literature. It is also an excellent addition to institutional libraries, museums, universities and researchers with an interest in the botanical history of Southern Africa.
