Fifty Years of Progress: An Account of the African Organisation of the Imperial Tobacco Company 1907–1957 by W. Twiston Davies is an attractive and increasingly difficult-to-find corporate history documenting the first half-century of one of Africa’s most influential tobacco enterprises. Privately published by The Imperial Tobacco Company (of Great Britain and Ireland) Limited in 1957, the volume records the development of the company’s African operations from its beginnings in 1907 through to its fiftieth anniversary.
Fifty Years of Progress is illustrated throughout with high-quality photographic plates depicting tobacco cultivation, manufacturing, company facilities, landscapes, employees and agricultural developments across various African territories. Beyond its value as a company history, it serves as an important historical record of commerce, agriculture, colonial industry and economic development during the first half of the twentieth century. The narrative provides insight into the expansion of tobacco production, changing farming practices, transport networks and the growth of one of Britain’s largest commercial enterprises on the African continent.
Corporate commemorative publications of this quality were generally produced in relatively small numbers for internal distribution rather than commercial sale, making surviving copies increasingly sought after by collectors of Rhodesiana, Africana, tobacco history, business history and industrial heritage. The combination of historical photographs, quality production and limited availability makes Fifty Years of Progress an appealing acquisition for collectors as well as institutional libraries researching African economic history.
Fifty Years of Progress is an uncommon and well-preserved example of an attractive mid-century corporate publication documenting fifty formative years of Imperial Tobacco’s African operations.
