The Sportfolio: Portraits and Biographies of Heroes and Heroines of Sport and Pastime is a fascinating Victorian sporting publication issued in 1896 by George Newnes Limited. Beautifully presented in its original brown cloth binding with elaborate decorative stamping in black, blue and green, the book is both an attractive display piece and an important snapshot of late nineteenth-century sporting history.
Containing 140 pages, the volume presents photographic portraits and biographical sketches of many of Britain’s leading sportsmen, sportswomen, clubs and teams from the era. The Sportfolio covers an impressive variety of sports including cricket, football, golf, athletics, cycling, billiards, chess, lawn tennis, rowing, skating and more. Among the personalities featured are legendary cricketers such as W. G. Grace and C. B. Fry, prominent football clubs including Preston North End and Woolwich Arsenal, as well as leading golfers, athletes and other sporting champions who shaped the sporting world during the Victorian period.
Published during the golden age of illustrated books, The Sportfolio combines high-quality photographic reproductions with informative biographies, making it both a historical reference and an attractive collector’s volume. Original copies are increasingly difficult to source, particularly those retaining their decorative publisher’s cloth, making this an appealing acquisition for collectors of sporting history, Victorian books, football and cricket memorabilia, golf enthusiasts and libraries specialising in the history of sport.
Whether purchased for research, display or as an addition to a sporting library, this handsome first edition The Sportfolio captures the personalities, achievements and atmosphere of organised sport at the close of the nineteenth century and remains an enduring testament to Britain’s sporting heritage.
