Never Again: A History of the Holocaust by Martin Gilbert is a powerful illustrated history by one of the foremost historians of twentieth-century Europe and the Holocaust. Published by HarperCollins Illustrated in 2000, this substantial hardcover volume represents decades of Gilbert’s research into Jewish life in Europe and the events that culminated in the Holocaust.
Rather than presenting the Holocaust solely through statistics and political events, Gilbert combines the broader historical narrative with the experiences of individuals, families and communities. Never Again examines Jewish life before the Second World War, the rise of Nazism in Germany, persecution and deportation, the ghettos, concentration camps and mass murder, while also documenting resistance, survival and the experiences of those who escaped Nazi persecution.
Among the subjects covered are the Warsaw Ghetto uprising, the refugee voyage of the St Louis, Jewish children who found refuge in Britain, Anne Frank, Oskar Schindler and the experiences and reflections of Holocaust survivors. Gilbert incorporates historical photographs, documents and eyewitness testimony throughout, making Never Again an accessible visual history as well as a serious historical reference work.
With its combination of authoritative scholarship, extensive illustration and individual testimony, Never Again is particularly suitable for readers interested in Holocaust history, Jewish history, Nazi Germany, World War II and twentieth-century European history. It is also a worthwhile addition to a history or Judaica reference collection.
