Anatomy for Artists: Being an Explanation of Surface Form by Eugene Wolff is a classic reference work designed to give artists a practical understanding of the anatomical structures responsible for the visible form of the human body. This 1962 reprint of the Fourth Edition was published in London by H. K. Lewis & Co. Ltd. and is illustrated from original drawings by George Charlton.
Wolff was a distinguished anatomist and former Demonstrator of Anatomy at University College London and lecturer in anatomy to the Slade School of Fine Art. His medical knowledge is combined here with an artist-focused approach, explaining how the skeleton, muscles, joints and underlying structures influence the contours and movement of the human figure. Rather than presenting anatomy purely as a medical subject, Anatomy for Artists concentrates on those aspects most valuable to artists seeking to understand and accurately represent surface form.
George Charlton’s anatomical drawings complement the text throughout, making this a useful reference for students of figure drawing, portraiture, sculpture and traditional fine art. Anatomy for Artists covers the human form systematically and remains an interesting example of the rigorous anatomical training historically associated with academic art education.
This vintage 1962 hardcover retains its striking and highly distinctive illustrated dust jacket featuring skeletal figures, making Anatomy for Artists particularly appealing as an older artist’s reference book as well as a collectible example of mid-20th-century anatomical illustration. The original green cloth binding beneath the jacket is attractively lettered in gilt.
Condition – GoodÂ
The green cloth boards remain notably clean and attractive with bright gilt lettering and only minor age-related wear. Pages show general age toning but appear clean and firmly bound from the photographs. The original dust jacket is heavily worn and fragile, with pronounced tanning/discolouration, extensive edge wear, numerous tears and splits, substantial chipping and areas of paper loss, particularly around the spine ends, corners and folds.
