Shaka Zulu: The Rise of the Zulu Empire by E. A. Ritter is one of the classic twentieth-century accounts of Shaka kaSenzangakhona and the extraordinary emergence of the Zulu kingdom in southern Africa. First published by Longmans, Green in 1955, this copy is from the Second Impression of the same year, making it an early issue of a work that would subsequently be reprinted numerous times and become a familiar title in Africana collections.
Across 383 pages, Ritter traces Shaka’s life from his early years and rise to prominence through the military and political transformation of the Zulu people. Shaka Zulu: The Rise of the Zulu Empire examines the personalities, conflicts, alliances and military organisation surrounding the growth of Shaka’s power, placing his remarkable career within the wider history of Zululand and southern Africa. The volume includes illustrations, maps, bibliography and index, adding considerably to its usefulness as a historical reference. Bibliographic records confirm the original Longmans, Green edition as a 383-page publication from 1955.
Ritter’s interpretation of Shaka has been influential but should be read in the context of the historiography of its period; later scholarship has reassessed aspects of early written accounts of Shaka and the Zulu kingdom. This makes Shaka Zulu: The Rise of the Zulu Empire interesting not only as a biography but also as an example of mid-twentieth-century writing on Zulu history.
Particularly appealing for an Africana collection, this early 1955 impression retains its striking original illustrated dust jacket, featuring Shaka with shield and weapon against a background of Zulu warriors.
