The British Railway Locomotive 1803–1853: A Brief Pictorial History of the First Fifty Years of the British Steam Railway Locomotive, compiled by G. F. Westcott, is an attractive vintage railway publication produced for the Science Museum and published by Her Majesty’s Stationery Office. Originally issued in 1958, this copy is the 1962 reprint and provides a compact visual history of the formative first half-century of British steam locomotive development.
Presented in an appealing small-format A5 landscape booklet, The British Railway Locomotive contains 14 pages of introductory and historical text followed by 32 black-and-white plates. These illustrations document the remarkable progression of locomotive engineering between 1803 and 1853, an era that transformed experimental steam-powered machines into practical railway locomotives capable of revolutionising transport and industry.
The plates provide a particularly interesting visual record of early locomotive design and engineering, including important machines associated with the pioneering years of British railways. Among the locomotives illustrated is Timothy Hackworth’s Royal George of the Stockton and Darlington Railway, alongside numerous other early designs showing the rapid evolution of boilers, wheel arrangements, frames, cylinders and mechanical systems.
The British Railway Locomotive is an excellent addition to a collection devoted to British railway history, steam locomotives, railway engineering, industrial history, transport history or vintage railway ephemera, and particularly appealing for its extensive sequence of period illustrations.
