Reflections on Flyfishing: Further Thoughts of a South African Flyfisherman by Tom Sutcliffe is a sought-after South African fly-fishing title from one of the country’s best-known angling writers. First published in 1990, this was Sutcliffe’s second book, following his popular My Way with a Trout, and combines practical fly-fishing knowledge with personal observations, experiences and reflections drawn from many years spent on South African waters.
Written and illustrated by Sutcliffe himself, Reflections on Flyfishing captures both the technical and contemplative sides of fly-fishing. His writing goes beyond simply catching trout, exploring the rivers, landscapes, fellow anglers and experiences that make the sport so compelling. This distinctly South African perspective gives the book particular appeal to local anglers and collectors of Southern African fishing literature.
Reflections on Flyfishing was published by Mark and Ronald Basel on behalf of the Fly Fishers’ Association and the Natal Fly Fishers’ Club. Significantly, Sutcliffe donated the publishing rights to these organisations, with proceeds from sales intended to support and promote fly-fishing within the clubs.
Illustrated throughout and firmly rooted in the South African fly-fishing tradition, Reflections on Flyfishing has become an appealing collectible for enthusiasts of trout fishing, fly tying, angling literature, South African sporting books and KwaZulu-Natal fly-fishing history. Reflections on Flyfishing is an excellent addition to a specialist fishing library and a particularly appropriate companion volume to Sutcliffe’s My Way with a Trout.
