Through Mashonaland with Pick and Pen by J. Percy FitzPatrick is an important work of southern African travel, exploration and colonial history, recording FitzPatrick’s experiences during a journey into Mashonaland in 1891. Originally published in Johannesburg in 1892, this 1973 revised edition was edited and introduced by noted South African historian A. P. Cartwright and issued by AD Donker as part of its Africana Library series.
FitzPatrick, later famous as the author of Jock of the Bushveld, accompanied Lord Randolph Churchill on a journey through Mashonaland during a formative period in the history of southern Africa. Written from FitzPatrick’s first-hand observations and contemporary writings, Through Mashonaland with Pick and Pen provides an engaging account of travel, personalities and events encountered along the way. Among the historical figures associated with his narrative are Cecil Rhodes, Lobengula and some of the early miners, settlers and adventurers of the region.
Through Mashonaland with Pick and Pen offers valuable insight into late nineteenth-century Mashonaland and the rapidly changing political and economic landscape of southern Africa. FitzPatrick’s accessible writing gives the book appeal beyond academic history, particularly for collectors interested in Rhodesiana, Zimbabwean history, early exploration, colonial-era travel and classic Africana.
