Michael Palin’s Hemingway Adventure by Michael Palin

Michael Palin’s Hemingway Adventure is a wonderfully illustrated travel narrative in which celebrated writer, broadcaster and former Monty Python member Michael Palin sets out in search of the places, landscapes and experiences that shaped the life of legendary American author Ernest Hemingway. First published in the United Kingdom in 1999 by Weidenfeld & Nicolson, the book accompanied Palin’s BBC television series but was created as an independent work from his own diaries and notes rather than simply as a transcript of the programme.

in Michael Palin’s Hemingway Adventure, Palin follows Hemingway’s extraordinary geographical trail across several continents, visiting locations closely associated with the writer’s life and work. His journey takes him from Hemingway’s childhood haunts in Michigan to Italy and the battlefields of the First World War, Carnival in Venice, bullfighting in Spain, Hemingway’s early years in Paris and his famous connections with Cuba. Further travels include marlin fishing in the Gulf Stream, daiquiris in Havana, safari country in Kenya and Uganda, Key West, and the landscapes of Montana, Idaho and the American West.

Michael Palin’s Hemingway Adventure combines literary biography, travel writing, history and Palin’s characteristically observant approach to people and places. Basil Pao’s photography provides a strong visual dimension, documenting the journey and the varied landscapes encountered along the way.
