I Heard the Old Men Say: Secrets of the Cape that has Vanished, and Little-Known Dramas on the Fringe of Living Memory is a classic work of South African Africana by the celebrated author and journalist Lawrence G. Green. First published by Howard Timmins in Cape Town in 1964, this is the desirable first edition, complete with its colourful illustrated dust jacket and illustrations by Leng Dixon.
Green was renowned for preserving the stories, personalities, legends and forgotten episodes of southern Africa, and this volume concentrates particularly on the Cape and a way of life that was already rapidly disappearing when he wrote the book. Drawing upon personal recollections, conversations with older residents and his extensive knowledge of Cape history, I Heard the Old Men Say brings together colourful accounts of people, places and events that might otherwise have slipped from living memory.
Across 296 pages, the reader encounters the social history, characters, traditions and lesser-known dramas of Cape Town and its surroundings. Green’s approachable narrative style makes I Heard the Old Men Say equally appealing to serious collectors of Africana and general readers interested in the history and folklore of the Cape.
This 1964 first edition I Heard the Old Men Say is particularly attractive for its period dust-jacket artwork, depicting a lively Cape Town scene beneath Table Mountain. Lawrence G. Green remains one of the most collected popular South African writers, and his earlier Howard Timmins editions are increasingly sought after by collectors of Africana, Cape history and vintage South African literature.
