Birds of Africa South of the Sahara: A Comprehensive Illustrated Field Guide by Ian Sinclair and Peter Ryan is an ambitious and exceptionally useful single-volume guide to the extraordinary birdlife of sub-Saharan Africa. First published by Struik Publishers in 2003, this comprehensive field guide was produced with the assistance of noted ornithologists Patrice Christy and Phil Hockey and features extensive colour artwork by leading bird illustrators.
Covering approximately 2,105 species, together with around 70 additional vagrants, Birds of Africa South of the Sahara encompasses the birds found throughout Africa south of the Sahara Desert, excluding the Afrotropic Region’s islands, while including Socotra, Pemba and islands in the Gulf of Guinea. More than 3,000 bird images across 359 plates provide an impressive visual reference for identification.
Individual species accounts highlight important identification characteristics and differences between similar species while also providing information on habitat, status and vocalisations. Distribution maps accompany the species accounts and help birders establish geographical ranges. The illustrations depict distinctive plumages as well as important geographical variations and diagnostic flight patterns.
Despite the enormous geographical area and number of species covered, Birds of Africa South of the Sahara follows a practical field-guide format designed for use by birdwatchers travelling throughout Africa.
An excellent reference for birders, ornithologists, naturalists, African wildlife enthusiasts and collectors of southern African natural history books, this original 2003 edition Birds of Africa South of the Sahara remains a particularly useful comprehensive reference to African avifauna.
