Great Prints & Printmakers by Herman J. Wechsler is an impressive large-format survey of the history, techniques and artistic development of printmaking. First published in 1967, this substantial and extensively illustrated volume explores the fine print as an original work of art while introducing the reader to many of the processes that have shaped graphic art through the centuries.
Wechsler discusses the principal methods of printmaking, including woodcuts, wood engravings, Japanese wood-block printing, chiaroscuro woodcuts, line engraving, drypoint, etching, aquatint, mezzotint, lithography, silk-screen printing and related techniques. Great Prints & Printmakers also examines practical aspects of print collecting, including states, signatures and numbering, restrikes, reproductions, cataloguing, authenticity and the care and framing of prints.
A particularly attractive feature is the extensive plate section. The work contains 100 plates, including colour examples, together with numerous additional illustrations, making Great Prints & Printmakers both an informative reference and an appealing visual survey of printmaking. The large format allows the reproduced works to be appreciated in considerably greater detail than is possible in a conventional art reference book.
This 1967 Thames & Hudson edition of Great Prints & Printmakers is particularly desirable for collectors of vintage art books, printmaking references and substantial illustrated art volumes. The original pictorial cloth binding, with gilt lettering and a large black printed illustration, is itself striking and decorative.
Condition – Good
The grey cloth boards show noticeable overall fading/sunning, with particularly evident uneven discolouration along the margins and spine. The gilt lettering has also become somewhat subdued with age. There is scattered spotting and surface soiling to the cloth, together with general shelf and handling wear.
The page edges show age-toning and scattered foxing/spotting, with some uneven discolouration visible to the text block. The endpapers display toning, foxing and scattered spotting, including more pronounced age-related discolouration near the edges. Internally there is expected age toning and occasional spotting.
