Suid-Afrika se Vlootmagte 1922–2012 by André Wessels

Suid-Afrika se Vlootmagte 1922–2012 by André Wessels is a comprehensive Afrikaans study documenting 90 years of South African naval history, from the establishment and early development of the country’s naval forces in 1922 through to the modern South African Navy in 2012. Published in 2017 by SUN MeDIA Bloemfontein under the SUN PReSS imprint, this is the First Edition.

Written from an academic historical perspective, Suid-Afrika se Vlootmagte traces the origins, development and changing role of South Africa’s naval forces against the wider background of the country’s political, military and international history. The early period from 1922 to 1945 is examined before the author turns to the different types of vessels that subsequently served in the South African naval forces and the roles they performed.

Among the vessels and subjects discussed are frigates, destroyers, minesweepers, minehunters, patrol boats, hydrographic survey vessels, combat support ships and submarines, as well as other specialist naval craft. Naval developments are considered within the context of South African political history and international events, providing the reader with more than simply a catalogue of ships.

Suid-Afrika se Vlootmagte was subjected to an independent academic peer-review process and provides a valuable researched reference for students, historians, naval enthusiasts and collectors. Its specialised South African focus makes it particularly relevant to collections covering the South African Navy, SANDF, maritime history, military vessels, naval warfare and South African defence history.
