The Magic of Marbling – Rob & Jacky Fletcher

The Magic of Marbling by Rob and Jacky Fletcher is an attractive and practical introduction to the decorative art of marbling, published by Tafelberg Publishers in Cape Town in 1995. Beautifully illustrated in colour, the book explores the fascinating process of creating the flowing, intricate and often unpredictable patterns associated with traditional marbled papers and decorative surfaces.

Marbling has a particularly strong association with the history of books and bookbinding, where hand-marbled papers were traditionally used for endpapers, covers and decorative bindings. The Magic of Marbling introduces the reader to the creative possibilities of the technique, making it suitable for artists, craftspeople, bookbinders, paper enthusiasts and anyone interested in traditional decorative arts.

The striking cover itself provides an excellent example of the extraordinary range of patterns and colour combinations achievable through marbling. Inside, the Fletchers present the subject in an approachable manner supported by photographic illustrations, making The Magic of Marbling useful both as an instructional reference and as inspiration for creative experimentation.

Published in South Africa by Tafelberg Publishers, this is the 1995 First Edition and is an appealing addition to a collection devoted to arts and crafts, bookbinding, paper arts, decorative techniques or South African craft publications. At only 48 pages it is a relatively concise work, but its specialised subject matter and colourful presentation give it considerably more interest than a general craft manual.
