Art Deco Bakelite Jewelry & Boxes: Cubism for Everyone by Peter and Deborah Keresztury and Nancy N. Schiffer is an extensively illustrated collector’s reference devoted to one of the most distinctive materials and design movements of the twentieth century. Published by Schiffer Publishing in 2001 as part of its respected series of books for collectors, this substantial hardcover examines Bakelite jewellery and decorative boxes within the wider development of Art Deco design.
Art Deco Bakelite Jewelry & Boxes explores how the geometric vocabulary of Cubism influenced the streamlined and highly stylised forms associated with Art Deco during the 1920s and 1930s. Particular attention is given to the use of triangles, circles, rectangles and bold combinations of colour, showing how these design principles translated into wearable jewellery and practical decorative objects.
Approximately 170 colour photographs present an impressive selection of vintage Bakelite pieces, including necklaces, pendants, bracelets, brooches and boxes. Examples demonstrate the remarkable variety of colours, forms and geometric compositions achieved by designers working with this revolutionary early plastic. Art Deco Bakelite Jewelry & Boxes also considers the influence of colour, the Russian Ballet and contemporary decorative trends on Art Deco aesthetics.
Originally issued with a price guide, the monetary values should naturally be regarded as historical rather than current market valuations. Its real continuing value lies in the identification, design and collecting information, together with the extensive photographic record of genuine period pieces.
Art Deco Bakelite Jewelry & Boxes is an excellent reference for collectors, antique dealers, jewellery enthusiasts, designers and anyone interested in Bakelite, early plastics, Art Deco and twentieth-century decorative arts.
Condition – Good
The hardcover itself remains sound with a clean, well-preserved text block. The dust jacket displays general shelf and edge wear, with creasing, rubbing and small tears/chipping, most noticeably around the spine ends and corners. Some loss around the upper spine area of the jacket. Overall a solid and attractive working or collector’s copy, with the principal defects confined to the dust jacket.
