Maverick Writers – Literary Mentors & Friendships: A Memoir by Anthony Akerman (Signed)

Maverick Writers: Literary Mentors & Friendships: A Memoir by acclaimed South African playwright, screenwriter and memoirist Anthony Akerman is a warm, personal and engaging exploration of the writers, dramatists and cultural figures who shaped his literary and creative life. Published in Johannesburg in 2026, this memoir offers an unusually intimate perspective on some of South Africa’s most significant literary personalities, viewed not simply as celebrated names but through Akerman’s own experiences of friendship, admiration, theatre and cultural activism.

Akerman, whose distinguished career includes the award-winning plays Somewhere on the Border, Dark Outsider, Old Boys and Leading Ladies, lived in exile in Amsterdam from 1975 until his return to South Africa in 1992. His experiences placed him in contact with an extraordinary circle of writers and artists. Maverick Writers draws on these relationships to revisit figures including Athol Fugard, André Brink and Breyten Breytenbach, combining literary recollection with personal anecdote and South African cultural history.

The result is both a memoir and a record of a remarkable period in South African letters. Maverick Writers will appeal particularly to collectors and readers interested in South African literature, theatre, literary biography, writers in exile and the country’s cultural and political history.

This copy is especially desirable as it has been personally signed by Anthony Akerman on the title page.
