Hokoyo: Silent Spoors & Parting Blades by Julie Anne Margaret Edwards is a deeply personal account of wildlife conservation, adventure and the struggle to protect some of Africa’s most threatened animals. First published in South Africa in 2009 by Plains of Africa Safaris, the book follows Edwards through an extraordinary life shaped by her passion for wildlife, particularly the endangered rhinoceros, and her determination to give a voice to animals threatened by human activity.
Hokoyo moves between Europe and Africa, combining autobiography, conservation history, personal encounters and stories of the remarkable people and animals that influenced the author’s life. Edwards recounts travelling by bicycle and with a horse, while her conservation work brought her into contact with prominent figures in African wildlife protection. Of particular interest is her friendship with legendary conservationist George Adamson, whose words of encouragement and support are reproduced on the rear cover.
Hokoyo deals strongly with rhinoceros conservation and the growing threat posed by poaching, making it particularly relevant to collectors of African wildlife literature, environmental history and conservation titles. Photographs of black rhino, elephants, George Adamson and the author’s conservation activities add documentary interest to the volume.
Part of the proceeds from the original sale of the book were donated to The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust.
