Grand Prix Driver by Hermann Lang is the autobiography of one of the notable German racing drivers of the pre-war Grand Prix era, translated into English by Charles Meisl and featuring a foreword by renowned Mercedes-Benz racing manager Alfred Neubauer.
Lang recounts his progression from motorcycle racing and early mechanical work through to his career with Daimler-Benz and his emergence as a leading Grand Prix driver. Grand Prix Driver offers a valuable first-hand account of European motor racing during the 1930s, including major events such as the Tripoli Grand Prix, AVUS and Nürburgring, as well as the intense rivalry and technical development surrounding Mercedes-Benz competition cars.
The narrative covers Lang’s work as an engine fitter and racing mechanic, his transition into competitive driving, his major victories, the interruption caused by the Second World War and his eventual return to racing. For collectors of Mercedes-Benz, historic motorsport and pre-war Grand Prix literature, Grand Prix Driver is an appealing period account written by someone directly involved in one of motor racing’s most important eras.
