Particular attention is devoted to Harry Oppenheimer, who inherited his father’s considerable business responsibilities and continued developing the family’s interests in diamonds, gold, platinum, copper and other mineral resources.
Beyond its biographical narrative, the book offers insights into South Africa’s economic development, the evolution of its mining industry and the relationship between industrial expansion and the country’s broader historical circumstances.
The substantial 526-page volume is illustrated with historical black-and-white photographs and includes maps, a bibliography and an index, making it a useful reference for researchers and readers interested in South African industrial history.
An interesting addition to any Africana collection, Oppenheimer and Son will appeal particularly to collectors of South African historical biographies, mining literature, corporate histories and publications documenting the development of the country’s diamond and gold industries.
