The West Rand Jive Cats Boxing Club by Lauren Liebenberg is a compelling coming-of-age novel set against the backdrop of South Africa’s mining communities during the late 1950s. Published by Virago Press in 2011, this evocative work explores childhood friendship, loyalty, courage and the loss of innocence in a society divided by race and inequality.
Set in 1958 on the West Rand near Johannesburg, The West Rand Jive Cats Boxing Club follows twelve-year-old friends Tommy and Chris as they navigate the challenges of growing up in a mining community. Captivated by the exciting sounds of Elvis Presley, Little Richard and the infectious rhythms of South African kwela music, the boys find adventure in the local dance halls and boxing rings.
Central to their experiences is the West Rand Jive Cats Boxing Club, where the enigmatic Jock McGinty provides guidance and an opportunity for the boys to prove themselves. However, their youthful adventures take a darker turn when Tommy’s vulnerable younger sister, Cecilia, becomes caught in troubling circumstances that force the friends to confront difficult choices between loyalty, betrayal, cowardice and courage.
Liebenberg vividly recreates the atmosphere of 1950s South Africa, capturing the sights, sounds and social divisions of Johannesburg’s gold-mining communities. Her sensitive portrayal of childhood relationships and the complexities of human behaviour makes The West Rand Jive Cats Boxing Club a memorable exploration of friendship and moral responsibility.
The West Rand Jive Cats Boxing Club is the second novel by Lauren Liebenberg, whose debut, The Voluptuous Delights of Peanut Butter and Jam, was shortlisted for the Orange Prize for New Writers.
