The Matopos edited by Sir Robert Tredgold is a fascinating historical and geographical study of the celebrated Matopos Hills, now known as the Matobo Hills, in present-day Zimbabwe. Published in 1956 by the Federal Department of Printing and Stationery, this revised edition of Dr. E. A. Nobbs’ earlier work, A Guide to the Matopos, provides an extensive account of one of Southern Africa’s most historically significant landscapes.
The book explores the remarkable granite formations, geological history, archaeological discoveries and natural environment of the Matopos region, alongside its importance in the history of Matabeleland and Southern Rhodesia.
Particular attention is given to the region’s association with prominent historical figures, including Cecil John Rhodes, whose grave overlooks the surrounding landscape at the celebrated View of the World, Sir Leander Starr Jameson and Sir Charles Coghlan. Other historical subjects include the Shangani Memorial, the Matabele Rebellion, the Ndebele rulers Mzilikazi and Lobengula, and the religious and cultural significance of the M’limo.
Additional chapters examine the archaeology and prehistory of the hills, early settlement, the development of Matopo National Park, indigenous flora and fauna, local climate and conservation efforts. The inclusion of historical photographs, illustrations and a fold-out map provides valuable visual material complementing the detailed text.
With 114 pages of historical and geographical information, The Matopos represents an interesting record of the region during the period of the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland.
An excellent addition to any collection of Rhodesiana, Africana, Zimbabwean history or Southern African natural history. Particularly appealing to historians, researchers, collectors of colonial-era publications and readers interested in the cultural heritage and historical geography of Matabeleland.
